Most people know two lunar phases: New Moon and Full Moon. But the lunar cycle has eight—and each has its own energy. Working with all 8 phases means shifting from a monthly relationship with the Moon to a weekly one.
Phase 1: New Moon — Intention
Energy: beginning, silence, seed. Plant your intentions. To do: meditate, write, set intentions. To avoid: spreading yourself too thin.
Phase 2: Waxing Crescent — Momentum
Energy: initial movement, faith, first action. The intention takes its first steps. To do: start, commit. To avoid: over-analyzing.
Phase 3: First Quarter — Obstacle and Decision
Energy: friction, choice, resistance to overcome. You encounter the first obstacles. To do: act, decide. To avoid: procrastinating.
Phase 4: Waxing Gibbous — Refinement
Energy: improvement, adjustment, details. Energy is high but not yet culminating. To do: revise, improve, ask for feedback.
Phase 5: Full Moon — Culmination
Energy: revelation, intensity, accomplishment. Everything is illuminated, emotions are at their peak. To do: celebrate, see clearly, honor. To avoid: major impulse decisions.
Phase 6: Waning Gibbous — Sharing
Energy: sharing, spreading, generosity. Focus on sharing what has been accomplished. To do: teach, communicate, offer.
Phase 7: Last Quarter — Integration
Energy: assessment, reorientation, letting go. Integrate the lessons of the cycle. To do: cleanse, simplify, release. To avoid: starting new projects.
Phase 8: Balsamic (Dark Moon) — Withdrawal
Energy: solitude, deep integration, gestation. The most internal phase. To do: rest, meditate, dream. To avoid: forcing yourself, judging your "productivity."
Lunar alignment is, first and foremost, permission. Permission not to always be at your maximum.
